The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), headquartered in Accra – Ghana, is an organization that administers a social health insurance scheme to residents of Ghana. The NHIA also has regulatory oversight over the private health insurance companies operating in the Republic of Ghana. With a focused directive to support and encourage electronic heath records, the NHIA exclusively engaged ecfirst, Home of the HIPAA Academy, to deliver the Certified HIPAA Professional (CHP) and the Certified Security Compliance Specialist (CSCS™) instructor-led training programs in Accra, Ghana during the months of August and September, 2012.
Fifty management and technical staff from the NHIA, the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the 37 Military Hospital, the Police Health Services, Christian Healthcare Association of Ghana (CHAG), and the three leading health facilities in the country – Korle-Bu, Tamale & Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals – participated in this seminal training program.
The NHIA is very serious about establishing credible safeguards in its security architecture and the CHP and CSCS™ Programs enabled the team to carefully step through critical areas of significance,” stated Dr. Gustav Cruickshank, Chief Internal Auditor, NHIA. “The CHP Program is the gold standard in the industry that addresses all core aspects of the HIPAA and HITECH regulations. The CSCS™ Program is the world’s first program that thoroughly examines the areas of cyber security and regulatory compliance standards such as ISO 27000, PCI DSS, and FISMA.
The risk to patient information in healthcare organizations and business associates is significant. A risk to Protected Health Information (PHI) today is a risk to the organization. Symantec recently reported that targeted attacks rose to an average of 151 per day in the first half of 2012 (WSJ, July 19, 2012).
The NHIA has taken the initiative, in fact demonstrated leadership in being proactive to raise the level of knowledge significantly to better understand how to appropriately protect confidential, sensitive information it processes for its customers. The students were actively engaged and focused in thoroughly examining areas of potential risk related to the processing and management of confidential health information,” stated Ali Pabrai, Chief Executive, ecfirst.
